This Car's Options: Driver engagement in the 997 Porsche 911 was both distinctly modernized and classically familiar. Look and feel, the essential aura of the 997, seemed to nod back to its air-cooled predecessors yet heightened every sensation to woo legacy Porschephiles as well as a new generation of brand enthusiasts. On paper and in practice, the new 997 was a scintillating experience. But for the first time since 1977, the 997 911 was offered with a pair of engines, as the standard Carrera housed a 3.6-liter engine and the Carrera S received a 3.8-liter unit boasting a 30-horsepower advantage (up to 355). The more powerful “S” model also claims more standard equipment, including Porsche Active Suspension Management, larger brakes and wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights, a Sports steering wheel and aluminum interior trim.
